I so agree on with that! I was with byethost as well, and it just didn't deliver satisfactory output. I can only say that after all the trouble...
Avidemux is a great app for this! It has many integrated codecs, filter options for all kinds of encoding. It's available on several platforms aswell.
I grew up in a fairly small town and it was quite a rural area, but later moved to cities, and prefer them now, they just have more to offer!
There are probably some browser settings that let you disable this protection but I would recommend you leave it on, in case that you stumble upon...
