How To SEO idea using keyword phrases

    These days content is king.

Our buddy Googlebot likes to scan the content on your website to determine how relevant your website is in relation to keywords people type in the search box. What you place in your header tags (i.e. <h1> <h2> <h3>) and the text on your site which are actually links are highly relevant.

So, give Googlebot some bread crumbs. When optimizing your website for search engines, think about what people would type in Google's search box to find your website and try incorporating those phrases in your headers and links.

Of course, you should always write your page for people, not search engines. After all, who cares if you get the #1 position on Google or Yahoo if your website never converts to sales.

So write for people, but if you can write for both Google and people, that's a win-win situation for you.

Now for those keywords in your <meta> tags, go ahead and through them in there, it never hurts. But these days, they aren't really relevant.

Anyone have any SEO ideas to add?

    Thanks John!

I may also add one thing.

It's really good for SEO if you put the keywords into ALT tags. It's known for sure that Google takes into account the text written in the ALT tag only for those images that link to other pages; other alt tags are ignored. But if a user clicks on Google Images, first of all he will see those images that have alt text corresponding to the keywords he or she has typed into the Google search field. That's an additional traffic :)

Oh sure . . . Google Images get ranked!

Googlebot is like a bad manager at work - he shows favoritism. And I keep trying to tell him what to do but he just won't listen!!! ;)

I have a freebie website with shopping deals, I am not sure that I have my meta tags correct. I am sure it highly matters for traffic. Also, what are the best keywords for the word free stuff/samples?

    Any ideas?

    Thanks!

Hi sunnee, sorry about the delayed response.

Yahoo reads your meta tags more than Google does, but even still they are only marginally helpful.

For SEO, concentrate on attracting one way links to your website (the websites linking to you should be somewhat relevant to the content on your website), place keywords and phrases in your website's title, address, h1 and h2 tags, links, in the first and last paragraphs of your content, etc.

Hello ElmerJohnson. Meta tags are slightly more important to Yahoo than Google. Google almost ignores them, but not completely. Of course though, still use the meta tags. Pay special attention to your description one. It doesn't help much SEO-wise, but it helps to get people to actually click your link.

The tool you need to use to find your keywords is the Google AdWords keyword tool.

Type in the keywords you want and Google will tell you what kind of search volume it has for those words.

Pay attention to the drop down box above the keywords (when displayed) and to the right. It has options such as "Broad, Phrase, Exact, etc." I like Phrase the best as it means your keywords must be included in the search query, though it is good to note the Broad as well.

    Good luck.

I have heard that Google is going to change their algorithm and use more social information. Does this means that SEO will lost its effectivness?

If you have an article you can point me to in regards to Google I'll take a look.

Anything is possible. Take the meta tags as an example. They use to be highly important to Google, now they are barely noticed. I doubt, however, that using SEO in your content will change much. Remember, Google wants to be highly relevant to search queries people type in their search box.

So if someone types in "start a blog" in Google Search, your content better say something about it. That's more important than if someone from Stumble Upon links over to you and tags the article "blogging".
