How to upload, what is FTP

FTP is File Transfer Protocol. In short, to get files onto your website from your computer, you

    Go to ftp.yourwebsite.com
    login
    enter password
"put" all of your files. This means, copy your files and subfolders to to the website.

    1. If you are using Dreamweaver, go to Site (top menu bar) and Create a New site. It will ask you for the above information. It has an FTP tool buried in it.

    2. You can also use some FTP software. There are lot's of free one.

    3. You can also use IE. Enter ftp.mywebsite.com on the address bar. You'll see your website files but won't be able to do anything. In IE, on the right, you'll see a Page menu. Click on it. Click on Open Page as an FTP. Then login and password. At this point, IE acts like a Windows Explorer. You can cut and paste your files.

    4. Your webhosting supplier probably has a system to upload and download files. For example, Yahoo Small Business has a Manage Your Site area that has Upload and List tools.

Note: The start or home page should be named "index.html" or index.htm. Avoid capitol letters and spaces in your file names. Images are typically kept in a subfolder called "images". You may have to create those subfolders on your ftp site.

Finally, you can have more than ohe page on your website. You can make a folder and put everything under that one such as:

www.mywebsite.com\photos Make a subfolder called photos and have index.htm in that. Then, to see our photos, enter www.mywebsite.com\photos and it will come up.

I hope this terse summary helps.
