Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a dynamic condition. It changes often (as Google and other search engines change their rules). Now it is not keywords but keyword phrases and Google added time to load pages. That means you need to use keyword phrases, not just keywords and optimize your page to reduce loading time. I recently went from page 1 to page 3 in Google for "Trigonometry tutorials" because of time and keywords. I need to decrease download time and use keyword phrases. To do SEO now you need software. The minimum free software you should use:
Keyword Suggestion tool (use several for best results)
Free Search Term Suggestion Tool by KeywordDiscovery.com
Web Page analyzer (use several for best results)
Web Page Analyzer - free website optimization tool website speed test check website performance report from web site optimization
Meta Tags Analyzer, SEO Analyzer, Website load Time Checker, Keyword Density
Meta Tag Analyzer | Meta Tags Help
Web Page Position (use several for best results)
Free Monitor for Google - search engine position and web ranking seo software

These are just a few to help you

Useful post and good to know, thanks for it. In fact, I personally rely mostly on Google Analytics and Webmaster, they give me all the insight I need most of the times.

SEO puts you in a better position than your competitors. It increases the possibility of visitors finding you out more than your competitors.

Different SEO software (like different SEO companies) uses different techniques.
On page SEO should include internal links to your site (they are counted as links and it helps with navigation).
I am modifying the user manual for RedCrab (with permission) by adding links to the Contents, and adding an index with links. I am #3 in Yahoo for redcrab manual with the publisher #1 & #2 and #4 in Google (out of 63,900) and #7 in Google for red crab manual (out of 3,060,000). Internal links are important for SEO. This information was obtained from SEO software information (each SEO software emphases different areas, so use several for best results).

SEO starts with keywords. Keywords are the words people use to find the page (what words describe your webpage). The more popular the keywords, in other words, the more people use those words the more will go to your webpage.
Therefore use popular keywords. To do this you need to use a keyword suggestion tool. Put these keywords in your title, description and body of the webpage (close to the top or begining). Sometimes I use a summary, description or introduction to be able to get my most important keywords within the first 100 words of the body of the webpage.
This is what Google, Yahoo and others look at (only one of the factors for webpage position) but an important one.

    To properly do SEO:
First check your main (or index page) for first time visitors. This is mainly from your keywords and keyword phrases.
Then check your other pages for first time visitors. Record this and the date for each page. Then your main page and other pages you need a unique name and description. What words would you use to describe that page (each must have a unique name and description (so you can tell them apart - and so can the search engines). The better you describe the content on each page, the less work on lowering your bounce rate. Also the better your keywords, the more traffic. Change the words and wait a week or two to see the results. If it increases, good. If not you may change the keywords again or go back to the original. After doing this and getting your best results (several tries) then we will try to increase second time visitors. Second time or return visitors rely on several items. How good your navigation is, how well your site displays in different browsers, the quality of the content (content is king - means content is most important) are some of the items that draws repeated visitors (fresh or new content is another important item - you may want to use a email to inform visitors of new content [called opt in] they sign up for you to email them. These are a few items that will increase traffic and return visitors.
