    Thanks Falcon,

I for one have bookmarked the page and will come back to it when I'm doing SEO.

Sometimes I find that I am unable to get effective keywords in the first 100 words of the body of the page. I found that adding an introduction and carefully wording it improves the SEO of the page.
Sometimes just simple changes to the page improves the SEO (position & visitors) a lot.
Using several 'web page analyzers' helps view the page properly. Also page spiders shows what search engine spiders see.
To get full effect of SEO, you must use software to analyze the page properly. Both for humans and search engine spiders. It is better for SEO to make several small changes then one big change.
When you use software, it is important to be able to analyze the results.
To get the full advantage of the software, you need guidance (a tutorial).
Free software normally does not include a tutorial. I will try and put up some instructions on some of the free software I use for SEO.
I would appreciate other people adding or correcting them if they have used the same software or similar (we all look at things differently).
This should help several of us (me too) in accomplishing our goal.

    "Trigonometry Tutorials"
    I went from 3rd pg No 8 (Google) - Thu 17 Nov 11
to 1st pg No 8 (Google) - Thu 26 Jan 12 by checking and changing keywords using the keyword discovery keyword tool. Use only a few keywords (3 - 5) for best results. You can not effectively do SEO for websites or webpages without the use of software. My site is free tutorials therefore I promote free software. I often use my experience and the free software I used to demonstrate effective SEO.
This forum will show you how to receive the results without the high price of software. It is a DIY (Do It Yourself) information and assistance for webmasters.

    Falcon,

    That's an impressive improvement...

I resent having to think about SEO as it's tough enough planning and creating the content - and the goalposts seem to keep moving anyway.

So I think I'll get into these tools and build the exercise in to the development process.

Thanks for bringing them to my attention.

For SEO (Search Engine Optimization) there are different areas.

The goal: first page Google for at least 3 keywords for the website and as
    many pages as possible.

One area is Search Engine Position, or what page you are on in the search
engine and what position (for which keywords). This is the easiest to track.
Your title and description are below:

    <title>ViziGen - the code generation company</title> [37 characters]

    <meta name="description" content="ViziGen Ltd is a software development
company that specialises in the creation of code generation tools" />
    [103 characters]

vizigen is 1st page google pos 1
(how many people will search for "vizigen ??)
I think I would change the title. Put vizigen last and change the information
(Google allows 66 characters including spaces) can you use something else
    besides "generation company"

    Keywords:
(Free Search Term Suggestion Tool by KeywordDiscovery.com)
    software 2051
    development 208
    company 239
    creation 423
    code 5637
    generation 233
    tools 10453
    html editor 137
    html color codes 62
    html templates 53
    html codes 45
    css code 13
    css template 12

The first family of products is called ViziGenHC and its four variants all
    generate HTML and CSS code.

ViziGenHC-Free is identical to ViziGenHC-Pro except for the fact that it is
free to use and only three pages can be generated.

ViziGenHC-Pro allows you to create templates for web page layouts and as many
web pages as you like. Complete web sites can be generated and uploaded to
the project's web server using a fully automated FTP facility that optimises
the operation by only transferring changed files.

ViziGenHC-Admin has all the capabilities of ViziGenHC-Pro but in addition it
allows "Clients" to be created and given the ability to edit web page content
    using ViziGenHC-Client.

ViziGenHC-Client basically only allows users to edit the content of the pages
they have been granted access to by an "Administrator" using ViziGenHC-Admin.
A simple WYSIWYG editor is used to perform the modifications so no technical
ability whatsoever is required... The project's web server is updated
    automatically when the user saves.

    Website position tool:

Try a google website position tool
I have used several and found some to be inaccurate
Be sure to check them for accuracy using a website of known position
    - Google™ Website Position Checker » Keyword Tracking Tool
this one I found to have some inaccuracies
    - Google Keyword Tool
This one seems to have temporary difficulties (I have used it in the past)
    - Search engine optimization SEO Company Promotion ranking Services internet marketing placement
This has several tools to use. Check 100 Web Tools
top left side below SeG (Search Engine Genie) or the tool bar
    - googlesearchpositionfinder.com -- Find the position your website is at for any search term in $search_engine_name
This has me in page 1 position #0 when it shows pos # 5
when checking, I'm actually pos 3 (I wonder if they count ads as pos 1 & 2)

Answer to PM and post above:
Major changes in information are not required. Sometimes just changing a word from plural to singular is enough. For trigonometry tutorials I just added an introduction and it worked.
    Look at the difference below:
    calculator 2650*
    calculators 365
    test 1803*
    tests 167
    answers 1280*
    answer 337
    solutions 186
    solution 161
    math 3114*
    problems 103
    -
Introduction to Trigonometry: Trigonometry is math of triangles. The trigonometric functions are functions of an angle (the relationship between the sides and angles). Trigonometric equation: An equation consisting of trigonometric functions. math lessons with answers, advanced math, math calculator, math help.
    -
The difference from plural to singular of the word can make a large difference. Also adding the introduction can put your keywords within the first 100 words. All this helps without major changes.
    -
Also in trigonometry tutorials I changed "problems with solutions" to "math lessons with answers". Not a big change in content but a large change in SEO.
    -
This information is obtained from SEO software. How to use the software effectively comes with tutorials and experience. This is what I am trying to do here. list the best free software that I have used and how to use it effectively. For tutorials I prefer written instructions and screenshots because of the time required to load videos. Then I like videos as an option.

    hope this helps

    How to check keywords

When checking keywords, make a list of all the keywords for your page that you can accumulate. Check similar web pages to get more ideas. Then list them alphabetically on the left side of the page. Be sure to include both singular and plural forms. Check the words in a keyword tool and include the popularity number with the word. Then list the words by popularity number on the right side. Record this in a spreadsheet (for easy modification - or adding additional words)
    -
    Example: ( a partial list )
    01. angle . . . . . . . . 475 math . . . . . 2822
    02. angles . . . . . . . 413 line . . . . . . 1924
    03. answer . . . . . . . 367 plane . . . . . 1438
    04. answers . . . . . 1168 answers . . . .1168
    05. area . . . . . . . . . 772 point . . . . . .1145
    06. circle . . . . . . . . 442 geometry . . . 851
    07. circles . . . . . . . . 156 area . . . . . . 772
    08. coordinate . . . . . . 28 planes . . . . . 555
    09. coordinate grid . . . 36 instructions . . 524
    10. coordinate plane . . 53 pyramid . . . . 479
    11. figures . . . . . . . . 172 angle . . . . . 475
    12. geometry . . . . . . 851 circle . . . . . . 442
    13. geometric shapes . 301 pyramids . . . . 431
    14. instructions . . . . . 524 angles . . . . . . 413
    15. lesson . . . . . . . . 308 answer . . . . . 367

This will give you a ready reference. Remember to check every so often as the popularity numbers do change over time. So at the top of the page list the date and the software used (different software will give you different numbers). Also list some of the most important competition websites. And list your present position, the changes you made to improve that position from the previous position. This 'reference' will help you improve your position and traffic. This information is mostly for position. Treat traffic separately. Also treat returning traffic separately. Treat bounce rate separately. You need to keep a balance between maximum traffic and low bounce rate. Later you will try for maximum conversions ($$$) low bounce rate with maximum traffic. This is done with analytics tracking and recording (checking to reach your targeted traffic). As you can see, SEO has many areas which overlap but are treated separately.

    Hi Falcon,

I'm confused as to what you're advocating in your last two posts... And whether you are talking about changing the content or the keywords.

A lot of it's over my head as I don't know what "popularity number" is nor "bounce rate".

For me, creating the content is difficult enough and I think I'd rather just do that with the reader in mind - not Google.

Maybe when I find no one's reading it I'll feel different and turn to SEO...

Changing keywords (usually less than 1% of the page - text count)
Keywords are in the title, description and page body (usually within the first 100 words or less)
    -
This does not change the content but a few words (keywords) or synonyms
of the word, or from singular to plural form of the word. This is to get better position for the words people use to search for your website (or information)
In other words you don't want to use the words of a college law professor to describe your site. People won't find it.
    -
When you see your page listed in Google, to the right with that listing is the word 'cached' (means saved) and when clicked on shows the page as Google saved it and the keywords highlighted in blue, yellow, and green.
This is a help tool for webmasters as they can check their keywords list.

    Thanks again Falcon...

I was going to ask why you'd want to click on "cached" just to see keywords highlighted in blue, yellow, or green - when you put them there.

Then I thought I'll take a look, do a few searches, and click on "cached" just to see - but that feature isn't there anymore it seems - not for me anyway.

So I googled "Google cached" and yes it seems to have gone - and people are wondering why.

Do a Google search for "vizigen"
You will see the word "cached" in blue
click on it to see the keywords highlighted in yellow
This gives you a check on your keywords and how many times they are used
As you change your site keywords, this changes
You will see the words Google uses to index your site

    Hi Falcon,

    I'm beginning to slowly understand...

The first problem I had was that "cached" in the Google search results has moved. You have to hover over the link and then over the double-right-arrow that's displayed.

Having looked at some cached pages I can now see that Google ignores some of the keywords I specify in meta/keywords and probably because I don't use them in the text.

When I get to re-doing the web site I'll try all the tools you mentioned and report back.

    Thanks for all your help.

if you want to know the latest information that Google has on you, then in the Google search box type, it should come up with a few links in key areas so you can see what is stored.

    Code:
    info:www.vizigen.com
If you really want to get ranked may I suggest that you dump or move this page as there really isn't content on that page
    Code:
    http://www.vizigen.com/default.htm
and use as your landing page, since there is content/links on that page and default .html is in your root directory (the first place looked at)
    Code:
    http://www.vizigen.com//vizigenhc.htm
changing vizigenhc.html to default and adjusting your links, moving all your pages out of "ViziGenHC" directory into the root.

Google uses what's in the 'title', 'description' and 'body'. The meta keywords is for you to remember what keywords you optimized for and web page analyzers. They use your meta keywords to analyze the page.
    -
    check "http://www.seobythesea.com/2012/01/classification-page-elements-search-results-alternative-titles-and-snippets/"
    -
Google has changed and is checking into the body of the page more. Title, description and body should have the keyword phrase or phrases.
    -
No matter how good the content is, if it can't be found you won't get traffic.
Good content is the most important, but finding it depends on your keyword and keyword phrases.
