I'm English & I live on the south coast, in a village, I don't travel abroad because I love the countryside here, to me, there's nothing more glorious than walking down leafy sun-dappled lanes, sometimes discovering a thatched pub tucked away, & resting on a bench outside, supping a pint of ale, hearing nothing but the bees, & the motorway miles away, do any other members live in England?

 

Not just criminals either, Australia in the 18th century desperately needed workers, so they promised a rosy future to those who emigrated, offering them free passage, but there were no decent jobs to be had when they arrived except sheep shearing & other labour-intensive, poorly paid jobs & no hope of returning to to England.

 

Good old Australia, eh CP! .....

Well, it just so happens that I do take it as disrespect, if you had taken the trouble to read post 51, you'd have seen that I'm English [& proud of it!] so your remark "Ah yes, and what an amazing blessing THAT was" did not amuse me one bit, in fact I take it as an insult & I expect an apology forthwith.

With deference to your position as moderator CP, I still stand by what I said, but, looking at it in retrospect, I think I may have been a little too strong with my comments, my only excuse is that, as I said, I have been a mod in the past, & forgetting myself, I went into "mod mode" sorreee!!

 

I'm English and live in England and to be honest there is not really anything anyone could say that would offend me regarding my nationality. I have never invaded anyones country, I have never had slaves, I have never given anyone the death sentance, i have never commited genoside. So why would I take offence if anyone made a comment about my race?

England is a great country and has given a lot to the world, It has also gained alot from other countries. There is not a country on the planet that is not better off becasue of England's touch and likewise there is not a country that has not had a possitive effect one way or another on ours. Thats not an arrogant statement its meant to be a compliment to the world.

I think the idea of this topic would always provoke either people's ignorance towards other cultures or peoples lack of understanding others humour. And it is difficult to tell from not listening to someones tone.

Anyway I can't really remember what my point was. What is everyones fave TV show at the moment? Mine is Ashes to Ashes with DCI Gene Hunt. classic.
