    Hi,

I'm starting a nonprofit to help fund stillbirth research, education, and policy advocacy. I've set up what I think is a decent-looking website (http://allanstrees.org ; Allan's Trees) but I'm no graphic designer, so I have no logo.

Some brief details about us: at the moment, we just pass money along to other stillbirth-related agencies, although that may change in the future. For now, it's not a huge organization. Here are some of the things we've done so far to give you a bit of an idea about us:

    - we've organized a craft sale (Event page)
    - we've gotten friends/family to donate money directly
    - we've gotten together with Christmas tree farms so that people can donate directly when buying a tree

I imagine future things will be similar. We have several friends who've planted trees for this, and we've talked to several families who really like the idea of planting a tree in memory of their child along with giving a donation, so I think that the idea of trees will remain fairly central.

We'd like the image in various sizes to use as a web logo, to put on posters/shirts, etc., but we'll obviously be grateful for anything you design!

I don't have an exact idea of what I want to logo to be, but here are my thoughts:

    - I like the idea of having several trees, perhaps one big and two small. I understand if that makes the design too complicated overall, though. Here was my attempt at a logo, made on a free logo-making website. I don't think it's a particularly good logo, but I do like the fact that it has several trees and has a style that looks somewhat child related. You folks certainly know more than I do about logo design, but I'm guessing it won't be possible to have that bottom line of text in a small web logo. It'd be nice in a larger version, though.

    - I like the idea of having a child involved in the logo somehow. This image of a child's hands inside a parent's hands holding a tree is really nice, although I don't know how good it would look as a logo instead of an image. Another possibility that I don't have a good picture for would be a child holding a tree cupped in its hands over its head. (these next two are not my images!):

Here are some tree images I like (they're not my images!). They're quite different from each other, but maybe they'll give you an idea of different kinds of things I like, and thus give you a lot of creative freedom :).

    - http://www.kerryquigley.counselling.co.uk/images/tree-logo.gif (I like the simplicity of this one)
    - http://awdps.co.uk/images/MoodleImages/WelcomeTree.jpg (I like the shape of these other two, especially when the leaves have a big arching shape)

As far as photos that I have, both images in my gallery ( Gallery ) are copyright free if you'd like to use them. Please don't feel obligated to use them, though!

I read through the stickies and saw that people often don't provide enough detail. I've provided what I can think of, but I'd certainly be more than willing to answer questions that might help you make a better logo.

    Thanks!

What font is did you use on your graphic?
I'm tinkering around with a few ideas. Will post in a bit.

    Hi,

I'm looking up the font now. I seem to have lost the link to the logo-designing website that I used, but I should be able to google it eventually.

Thanks for looking into the logos!

It's a cool idea, but I think the babies in the tree may be a little much. I like the idea of the tree coming out of the logo in babies3, and I really like the tree behind the text in babies2. The tree coming out of the hand is also very nice. Do you think it would look OK with one or two smaller trees in addition to the big one?

Felt Tip font is one that must be purchased - I found MarkerFelt which looks very close.
How would you want them and which direction would you want to go in. Since you made comment on all three.
I tried to put hands within hands, had trouble finding babies hands.
The tree in #2 is a tree of life symbol.
    how about these three.

ishkey, these last ones are starting to look really good. i might like the bottom one from post 6 as a banner and the top-right one from post 6 as a general logo for printed material. i also like the one in post 7 a lot, so i'm going to talk things over a bit with my wife just so that i don't send you in too many directions.

i'm sure you know this already, but taking pictures of adult/baby hands is tricker than i thought. i tried a few this morning in case they're useful, but i'll certainly understand if they're not. bigger versions can be found by removing the leading t_. i suppose this means i ought to review someone's website this evening :).

    Hi ishkey,

I like the top right one from post #5. I think I actually like it as is. Can I have a higher-resolution version? I have Photoshop, so I can work with the PSD file if that's easier.

I talked to my wife, and we like the hand/tree combo/color scheme from post #5 a little more than the one from post #6. Is it possible to make that with the hands from my images? I'll understand if it just looks better using the other image, of course. I'd like to use it as a website banner at the top of my site, so it'd be fantastic if you could make it in a size that looks good at the top of allanstrees.org.

    Thanks!

Here it is using your picture.
I have attached a zip file with all the parts you need so you can adjust it as you like. Even the fonts are enclosed, in case you need them.
If you ave any questions just ask, I'll do, my best to help and I'm sure CovertPea wouldn't mind assisting you, as her knowledge concerning graphics is vast.

Fantastic! Thanks! I'll play around in Photoshop and ask more questions as needed.

I do actually know a bit about resolutions, it turns out. Whenever I publish a paper in a scientific journal I'm required to submit images with appropriate resolutions. I've even written some little scripts that make sure my colleagues can easily generate images with the correct resolution :).

Sorry about that - I am so in tune answering questions, I sometimes forget people are knowledgeable in many areas.

I would be interested in reading some of your publications, if they are public.
Years long gone, I had the opportunity to publish some of my work in several areas, but like I said long ago when I was a young engineer. By my kids standard I am old.

Oh shoot. I looked back at my last post and it sounds a little snarky. There was certainly no need to apologize .. I just wanted to say that I know what resolution was, but I didn't mean to sound offended or anything.

I'm only a postdoc, so I don't have a ton of publications yet. They're all in biophysics/medicinal chemistry, either related to categorizing protein structures or related to using protein structures to design anti-cancer/antimicrobial drugs. I can send on some links if you're interested, but my best work is yet to come :).
