Thank You ishkey. I am now in the process of checking different zip programs on Algebra to see which on is easier and better (ie speed vs easier to use). If close, easier to use. The examples are my pages and results are not typical but what I get with the software mentioned. They should be able to repeat the results. I checked on SEO company prices to do this (got estimates) and they are out of range for small businesses. So this can be a place where they can get the information for Do It Yourself (DIY). Eventually we will have a step-by-step tutorial.

    Hi ishkey,

    Use Cookie-free Domains for Components
I didn't know how to make a domain cookie-free so I Googled it and the first article that came up was this one:

    http://developer.yahoo.com/performance/rules.html

It mentions many of the things both you and falcon have mentioned - but lots more too. It was written in 2006 from the description displayed by Google and I don't know how much of it still applies...

It didn't explain how to set up a cookie-free domain and I had to read another 6 articles before I found one that did. For anyone interested you can read how to do it here:

    http://www.ravelrumba.com/blog/static-cookieless-domain/

    Combining CSS Files
I've put this on the list of things that I need to make my application do.

Add an Expires or a Cache-Control Header
I've read up on this already - but I'm not sure how to do it - and even the support team at my ISP didn't know. Their servers are on Microsoft operating systems and I don't think I've got access to the things that let you do this. The closest I seemed to be able to get was to use things like the following, in the <head> section of my HTML:

    <meta http-equiv="expires" content="Fri, 30 Dec 2011 12:00:00 GMT">
    <meta http-equiv="last-modified" content="Mon, 03 Jan 2011 17:45:57 GMT">

I don't know if this would work and couldn't see how it could be applied to image and CSS files so I haven't persued it. Any advice would be welcome...

What you wrote about Apache servers can't help me - but hopefully others can benefit.

    VizGen video tutorials:
Too many click to continue, many could be eliminated with a pause, then automatically continue with the video. Make it as easy to use as possible. You can vary the pause time as required. About half the click to continue can be eliminated.

Look at Arithmetic tutorials, notice the introduction:
    http://freetutorials.name/Reference1/Arithmetic Tutorials.html
    -
The introduction is used to obtain keywords in the first 100 words of the body of the page (for good SEO).
You can use introduction, information, or instructions to obtain the same results.

    Hi falcon,

I thought I'd taken out all that click-to-continue stuff - and I've just taken a quick look and can't find any of it.

How are you getting to it?

Why are you on a Windows Server? It doesn't look like you use ASP.net Windows Servers normally cost more to host on.
The download desktop file is a Microsoft .NET application but your website is a basic htm.
In your root directory of your website server, do you have a, web.config file (asp.net) or a .htaccess file (Apache)

As per - "Add an Expires or a Cache-Control Header
I've read up on this already - but I'm not sure how to do it - and even the support team at my ISP didn't know. Their servers are on Microsoft operating systems and I don't think I've got access to the things that let you do this. "
If the isp support team doesn't know how to implement a basic function / or reference you, in the .NET Framework - I would be questioning why I host with them.
When you rent space on a server, which ever type you use, it is your protected space and operating system to setup as you wish. You might find one or two items locked out.
I guess this adjustment would be best left alone for awhile, you can decide if is worth the time.

    "Use Cookie-free Domains for Components"
    most servers work like this:
Log in to the Control Panel - Click the Domains link - Click the New button and select Create Sub-domain
Another adjustment best left alone for awhile.

glad to see you are looking into combining css files.

Change of subject - as far as Falcon's comment "VizGen video tutorials:
Too many click to continue, many could be eliminated with a pause, then automatically continue with the video."
he is right. some places the click is where you would need it to be, to pause and digest the info yet in others you wonder why is it there.

Now I will get out of the way and let you two have at it. Falcon is on a roll
Cheers as you say over there.

As for web page optimization, I tried :
    http://gtmetrix.com/
I like it better and the help is better. Note:
    Arithmetic tutorials About 1,600,000 results (0.26 seconds) Google pg 3 #7 8/8/2013
    http://freetutorials.name/Reference1/Arithmetic Tutorials.html
Page load time: 2.39s Total page size: 216KB Total number of requests: 36
    after minify css:
Page load time: 1.62s Total page size: 209KB Total number of requests: 33
    -
The first is with web page optimization, the second is with gtmetrix minify css. I just clicked on the link to minify and copied the results to my web page. WOW nice difference. You should try it.
    -
Next, how to reduce the number of requests.
    -
    hope this helps

Arithmetic tutorials lost position after optimization. It will take a little time to regain it or better. After the change, Google has to re-evaluate it then position it. Should take less than a week. We will see how it helped, faster is better.

I would appreciate other peoples information and input in this thread about optimization. I am not the expert, but have some knowledge. I am sure others have equal or better knowledge on the subject. "Optimization", web page optimization, improving download speed without changing page appearance, and Search Engine Optimization (SEO), improving position on search engines and increasing traffic. We are trying to help each other by sharing knowledge.

    Will you help ? ?

    Hi falcon & ishkey,

I think there's only one video using the "Click to Continue' approach and I was using it because people read at different speeds. Do you think it would be better if the spoken word (as opposed the written word) took people through the application's features?

    Hi ishkey,

I'm on a Microsoft server for legacy reasons. It's where my skills lie, or lay - they are probably a bit out of date now.

My thoughts on this "Expires" and "Last-Modified" stuff is that the infrastructure should take care of it. The web server knows when the file was last modified - why can't it just tell the browser so it can check it's cache? As you suggest - I think I'll put this to one side for now.

    Hi falcon,

I signed up on GTMetrix and tried it out - it looks good.

Also took a look at the RedCrab videos and think that narrating the video, rather than my written annotations, is better.

I agree with what you say about others joining in here and passing on their views, opinions, and advice etc.

    Something I do not understand:
    -
    Trigonometry tutorials About 546,000 results (0.19 seconds) Google pg4 #2 8/9/2013
    Trigonometry tutorials about 547,000 results (0.23 seconds) Google pg4 #1 8/11/2013
    Yahoo pg1 #7 8/11/2013
    http://freetutorials.name/Reference1/Trigonometry tutorials.html
Page load time: 1.99s Total page size: 224KB Total number of requests: 34
    after optimization
Page load time: 1.99s Total page size: 211KB Total number of requests: 34
    after removal of periods
Page load time: 1.90s Total page size: 225KB Total number of requests: 37
    -
I know time varies ( by line noise, time of day, number people on line, etc) so you should get an average, but before and after optimization page size reduced but load time the same. After removal of periods at end of line (before (/dl> or similar) page size increased ??? - it should decrease (but it is below 2.00s)
Note: Google pg 4 - Yahoo pg 1 (now for some SEO).

    Hi falcon,

Maybe it would be better to split a large page into three or four smaller ones than to try to reduce its size using these "optimization" techniques?

  18. navyfalcon

    navyfalcon Well-Known Member Verified Member

Depends; mine load under 2.00 sec after optimization (which is a good number). I already had to split Algebra tutorials and will split other math pages as they continue to grow, such as Calculus and Pre-Calculus. Plus remove old links and replace with new and better links. I need to better address "Home School Mathematics". Page size and content help determine Google position and ranking. Too small or too large (no good). A lot depends on type of content.

Your goal now should be to make visitors into return visitors. To accomplish this, have them want to use your CMS (content management system). That is to make it as easy as possible. A good tutorial is the solution.
Notice: example "Expires" and "Last-Modified". Their tutorials are easy for them to understand but not easy for a lot of people. Also the graph video tutorial on RedCrab was missing some items (try following it step by step) so it became necessary to redo the video or make a support text tutorial (support was better). It is difficult to make a tutorial that is easy to follow because we all assume "everybody knows that". To do it you assume that you know nothing and follow it "step by step" and correct (or add the missing) errors. I also have someone who does not know it try and do it following the tutorial. It is not a fool proof system but it helps (also takes more time).
I have a lot more to do for math and calculators, but the goal is to appeal to "home schoolers". This will increase my traffic and conversions.
"Know who your targeted audience is, and direct most of your efforts there". Mine is schools (middle schools, high schools, colleges, universities, distance education, home schools, adult schools, trade schools). Now my direction is home schools, later it can change to ...

    Some SEO information.
    http://freetutorials.name/Reference1/Trigonometry tutorials.html
    -
Notice at the top under Trigonometry Tutorials.
"Trigonometry is Math of triangles (plane or spherical) and the relationship between the sides and angles, and with trigonometric functions."
    -
this needs to be changed by using better keywords to increase position on Google, also introduction needs to change
Introduction to Trigonometry: Trigonometry is math of triangles. The trigonometric functions are functions of an angle (the relationship between the sides and angles). Angles can be in degrees or radians. Pi radians = 180 degrees, or 1 radian = (180 degrees/pi) and 1 degree = (pi/180 degrees) radians.
Trigonometric equation: An equation consisting of trigonometric functions. Also Math lessons with answers, Advanced math, Math calculator, and Math help
    -
The introduction was added to use good keywords for better position in Google. It worked for a while, now it needs to change as it is falling behind (lost a few pages in position). These two items should change keywords for better position.
These will be changed and then wait to see if it helps, then change again to improve position and traffic.

    hope this helps
