I down loaded Gimp today as i wanted to remove a background from the north wilts youth and minor league crest so i could put it on my website. I did managed to find a png image online but it still had a bit of white back ground on it. I used this image below today and manged to removed the background but when i but it on my webpage it had a fuzzy outline around it and looks terrible against my websites blue back ground. Does anyone know where i am going wrong here ?

I'm not sure how you removed the background in Gimp as I don't use it. Perhaps in Gimp you used an auto selection tool (magic wand in ps) to select just the grey and deleted it? If so it's not too successful as it would leave other yuck bits behind, especially around the ribbon. Try googling "removing backgrounds in gimp" for a lot of useful tutorials.
I've attached a cleaned png (right click and save as png) of the North Wilts crest and as you can see by the below right hand image, it posts well over a dark background.

By the way, congrats with your choice of using The Gimp, lotsa tutorials and practice and you'll be a pro in no time!

Glad you are now ok. I had an issue with a text banner which came with a black background. I wanted a transparent background. Using GIMP I selected the 'fuzzy' select tool, and then clicked on the background. Then I selected the 'Invert' toggle at the top which changed the selection to the text. A grey checked area appeared around the text. However, that is not an issue. I saved the image as a .gif. The grey area just represents the transparent area of the image. The banner now looks great on my website.

It only takes a quick Google search.
    Try THESE ideas.
If you're still not happy with the results how about paying one of our graphics peeps a few bucks to do it for you?
