I dont know the correct lingo to ask this but I know there is various ways to make a site show up on searches. I use google.

I used a temp google template for the time being (gotta figure out how to do pictures, make them first) while I work on one from here. But hey I gotta eat and want to market myself as much as possible with the webpage I have up.

I scanned through the topics here and didnt see anything apparent. Is there a basic primer on this here? Thanks, James

James, if I'm not mistaken you want your site to rank well in Google.

If so you should get a lot of links leading to your site. These links can be placed at different forums, blogs or other websites.
You should also add Google Sitemap to your site. It'll help Google scan your site more often.
Of course you should add your site to different web directories so people find out about it.
I also recommend you to be an active part of social websites like Stumble Upon and etc.
Good luck to your site! Hope you'll push it to the top of search lists!

    Thanks emilypal,
I wasnt even aware of google sitemap, that was must have info. And I am brainstorming ways of linking to places that may matter. That was exactly the kind of stuff I needed to know. Thanks

The two most effective ways (at the core) to get Google and other search engines to find you quickly is to:

    a) start a blog
    b) utilize Pay-Per-Click

I say start a blog because blogs are websites and pages that are continually updated frequently. Google LOVES that. I've noticed I'll write a blog article and tomorrow it's showing up in searches. Alternatively, I might code a static web page and not see it listed for a couple weeks.

I say use PPC because that can get you to the top of searches today. You just have to be willing to bid high but still leave room to turn a profit.

Secondly, you should learn about keywords and keyword phrases. Use them in your title tags and links when possible (just make sure you don't sound like you're writing for a search engine - they don't buy from you, people do).

A sitemap is good to have and I highly suggest having one. Like emilypal said, you can tell Google to visit your site more often - not necessary though if it never changes. Sitemaps don't have a direct link to search engine optimization in that they don't determine where in the searches you end up, just that you're indexed.

I have an article you might want to read about search engine optimization - 25+ SEO Tips For Getting Ranked Well In Search Engines.

Hope that helps some and good luck.

EventureBiz, 25+SEO Tips... was a very informative article, on SEO tip 6 I think you have a typo "So dont forget to omit these" Well written though, as a newbie at this I appreciate understandable writing.

@ thecarpenter - good catch, thanks I'll fix it. I'm glad you found it useful and I definitely try to write for newbies. I read many blogs and so many of them assume a certain level of expertise, especially technical blogs.

Aside from a site map you could have these files in your html_public directory,
    sitemap.html
    sitemap.xml
    ror.xml
    urllist.txt
    info.txt
and redirect people to a personal 400.shtml file

Yes, eVentureBiz is completely right about blogs.
They are really great for attracting people. Though, you should share some interesting and important information so people could trust you and come back for new tips.
If to speak about keywords I personally trust my intuition. I think which words I would type into a search box while looking for a certain product or information and then I optimize my texts for these very keywords.
And of course Relevancy is a great key to success. You domain name, your title and keywords should be relevant!
