I don't think it would work after step 3 because you'll need to put the circle behind the grid else you'll just see a Black circle.

yup tht's why i already mentioned to place the grid on top of the black circle also the grid should be bit smaller then the black circle.:)

Great idea to post up this tutorial JD. I'm still trying to get the hang of using Illustrator.
Is it possible to have the 'grid' off centre so as to have the ball look more realistic?

AI is dammn easy if u know how to use the tools ;) lol

and to make it realistic u can add bit of gradient like Ishkey done and to keep it offcenter well i havn't tried yet but seems we can do tht ;)

and Ishkey tht was amazing really loved that :)

Soccer balls are a bit harder to make, in that they require two shapes, Pentagons and Hexagons.
In the Flatten view and ISO view, the shapes are proportional.
When viewed as a Soccer Ball the shapes have to be distorted in order to achieve a realistic looking Ball.
This can be done with the Mesh Tool or individually adjusting the shapes with the Pen Tool.
The graphic below may help you to visualize it better.
One might say, you have to start from the center of the ball and wrap your head around it, in all directions. :)

Notice the Curve lines and Proportion changes in the shapes. Black = Pentagons
(Ball Rotated to give a different perspective.)

I didn't think it was that hard - just pointing out what two shapes you need to make it look like a Soccer ball.
    Only took me 15 minutes.
Just posted the AI file for others to see how I did it, since people's styles of drawing and what tools they use differ. Seeing what others do, is how I learn.
I save all my parts in files for reuse and modding.
But you know what they say each to their own.
