According to whom? In my opinion anti-virus software installed on your local system will become obsolete. Most of the protection for is moving towards the browsers rather. There is still some use because of applications that run on your pc but for web browsing I do not rely on an anti-virus program. Best defense, is good control for jscripts, flash and other plugins, for instance FF with noscript and ABP.

You should remember an attacker's primary objective today is to compromise your router, an area your best anti-virus doesn't even know about. And thats very easy once if you're careless having your browser running everything.

Hey danelsmith, someone told me you would say that here.

pamelaluck, I use AVG the free edition mainly because I don’t have to pay for it and seem like it does the job.

I have tried several, most are bloated and hog resources.
I have found over the years NOD32 to be the best, small, updates hourly and uses very little resources. I have not had a virus on my machines since using it.

Avast has improved dramatically since its overhaul. It's up there with the best free AV's now. Some great new features.

One of the best features is that you can have it run immediately when you boot before everything loads so in the case that there is a virus launched right off the get go it can take care of that as well. They have continued to leave me satisfied.

I plug my brain into my computer through the USB port and upload my consciousness into it like the Matrix and just beat the crap out of all the viruses kung-fu style. They all look the same with their black suits and shades and whatnot.
