HTML target=blank etc

    When linking to pages such as photo galleries or linking to external sites I used "target=".
    Using the party time template from this site (which is superb) I can no longer use "target=" because the template is xhtml strict and "target=" is a no no if want validation on my site.
    Anyone offer some advise on what coding I could use in place of "target=".
