Adobe Photoshop runs $599. That's really pricey for some of us amateurs. Even Dreamweaver is 399$.

    My questions are these.

    1. Do Photoshop and Dreamweaver pretty much do the same thing graphic wise? I know dreamweaver may do some flash.

    2. Are there alternatives besides gimp? PaintShopPro is a little more reasonable priced, but will this be sufficient for amateur webmasters that want to change some graphics?

    3. Are older versions of Photoshop drastically lower in price? If so, what do you recommend?

I really appreciate you looking at this, thanks in advanced!

    1) As Dexxa pointed out Dreamweaver is a HTML editor. For flash you will need to buy macromedia flash you do have some pre made buttons with dreamweaver you can use, but you can't make your on flash buttons with Dreamweaver.

    2) There are a lot of alternatives, but nothing beats Photoshop CS 2.
But you don't need photoshop CS 2 if you're just an amateur webmaster.
Adobe has it's own alternative for Photoshop called Adobe Photoshop Elements with a price tag of only $99

Here is a list of alternatives for photoshop:

    Adobe Photoshop Elements price: $99

    Ulead PhotoImpact 10 price: $89

Corel Paint Shop Pro 9.0 price: $99

    Microsoft Digital Image Suite 10
    $99

    3) You can find some old versions of photoshop on amazon for $119, but this is for photoshop 7 the newest is photoshop CS 2 aka photoshop 9.
The newest version has a lot of new things, but as an amateur webmaster I don't think you will need it.

If I had to choose which tool to buy Dreamweaver or Photoshop I would buy Photoshop.
There are more alternatives for dreamweaver than alternatives for photoshop.

Here is a list of Dreamweaver alternatives again nothing beats dreamweaver:

Notepad: it's free and on every windows pc
    NVU Price: Free
    HTML Pad 2005 price: $49
CoffeeCup HTML Editor Price starting at $49
    HotDog Professional price: $99
    And Much more...

www.1and1.co.uk are currently giving away dreamweaver mx with hosting packages - that may get round the dreamweaver problem - fireworks is also an alternative for graphics - also made by macromedia - (Who are now owned by Adobe)

    regards
