Hi everyone. I work in a newly formed Pupil Referral Unit (from the merger of two existing units) and I've been tasked with designing a school logo! I have spent days getting nowhere and wondered if anyone here wanted their work to be showcased by our school - full credit would of course be given everywhere.

I've read the sticky about not creating logo's from scratch so I'm so sorry if I'm pushing my luck but we don't have anything at all at the moment other than a name and a piece of paper. I've tried to answer all the questions as thoroughly as possible and am hoping that along with my critique of other websites (which I'm so sorry won't start tonight but I've been working on this post for the last 3 hours and my contacts have stuck to my eyes, I'll have a look tomorrow when I'm fresh!) will enamour someone to start me off with something.

1)What is the exact name you would like in your logo?
    Reigate Valley College

    2)What is your website address?
The exact address is still being argued over. The VLE design is light grey background with darker grey elements. The school site it not likely to differ significantly.

    3) Description of your website or business:
The school is a coeducatonal Secondary (age 11-16) Pupil Referral Unit for students who are at risk of becoming excluded from their mainstream school. The majority of students have a high level of social and emotional issues.

4)Search the Internet for any logos/designs on the web that you feel convey
the style you are looking for?
I like simple stuff, the Sony Ericsson logo. Clean lines, simple colours. Striking logo accompanied by a description. I really like the 3D too, brings it to life.

The clean lines and simplicity of this logo for Martin School are great finally the clean lines and depth of clyst also appeal

    5)Requested size of your logo:
The logo will be used on the school website, on letter head, newsletters, posters, identity passes, and possibly be embroidered onto clothing. So we need a web version and a higher res one. The smallest maybe the size of a Large Letter postage stamp going up to the size of a playing card? Apologies if that’s the weakest size description you’ve ever heard! Let me know if you need me to be more specific and in what way.

6)Do you have any images/photos that can be used for the logo?
sadly, nothing at all. The old school logo was just the school name in Times New Roman. We had a competition to design the logo but there were no entries.

Perhaps doing things backwards, I dislike this logo. It’s wispy, floaty, fanciful.

Logos with graphics that I like... I’m a fan of the java logo Simple, clever, strong yet soft. I also really like the Sun Microsystems logo Genius turning the word into the cube almost Esher-like, although the colour leaves me flat. This logo for Vividways is probably my favourite. Strong, colourful, simple, descriptive, relevant.

I’d like to keep away from the Coat-of-Arms/blazer badge feel that many school logos have.

7)What logo styles do you like?
Text only or text and image but not image only. An image that is built from or into the text such as the Sun Microsystems logo and although how you that relates to a school I cannot describe, just that I like the clever simplicity of it!

8)What colors do you want to see in your logo?
No more than 3 complementary colours. Currently purple is used at the school on sports kit and the Local Authority Corporate colour is dark green so if they could be somehow pulled together...

9)What colors do you NOT want to see in your logo?
Not red (too many negative associations; anger; danger; stop; fire), yellow (gets lost on coloured backgrounds, isn’t visually strong) or pink (too female).

10)Describe the target audience for your logo
This is SO broad... Students (age 11-16), parents/carers, staff, other professional bodies (home school network, mainstream secondary schools, mental health workers, local authority, OFSTED, further education colleges, social workers)

11)What are the top 3 things you would like to communicate through your logo?
Success; students that attend our school fulfill their potential
Caring; we care about your future and we’re going to nurture the best we can out of you
Opportunity; we won’t limit you, we will open doors, give you choices, enable you.

    12) Where will your logo be used (print, website, etc.)?
Oops, I think i already answered this earlier, apologies for duplication:
The logo will be used on the school website, on letter head, newsletters, posters, identity passes, and possibly be embroidered onto clothing

13)Do you have other info or links you want to share?
Please feel free to comment on anything else that you would like your logo to have if it has not been mentioned above.

14)Finally we need is there a style font you prefer, please let us know.
Font wise - open to ideas but I prefer Sans Serif as it’s cleaner and easier to read. Also nothing that has strong connotations such as wild west/wanted, graffiti, circus style

I hope that all makes sense to someone and I haven't created an impossible challenge.

Thank you for taking the time to get this far xx
