    Hi

I'm new on here and just wanted to say hello.

Been having a browse round and I have to say some of the designs on here are excellent and hopefully after a bit of training i might be able to get halfway to creating some decent designs.

I am a complete novice when it comes to any sort of desgining, but its something I've always been interested in. I would be grateful of some tips as i am looking to design a new logo for my football team. Anything from the best programmes to use, places that i can find tempaltes etc?!

I have had attempts on Paint but they are very very poor.

Looking forward to getting to know some people on here...

    cheers

Download GIMP. I use GIMP alot, as I only have PS on my laptop and I spend most of my time on my desktop. It's a free imaging application (GIMP stands for GNU Image Manipulation Program). It's pretty much the free version of PhotoShop, it has it's differences, it has it's similarities, it has it stongpoints and weakness'. Even if you can afford PhotoShop, GIMP is a perfect place to practise as it's alot more noob friendly.

Tell us how it goes, if you get it.

Thanks for this, I will download this tonight and give it a go.

Does anyone know where I could get some templates of badges/logos to work from? Or is it a case of taking an existing clubs badge and working from that? - I'm pretty sure i read in the forum rules about copyright etc?!

Take a look at this post here:
    CREATE YOUR OWN FOOTBALL CREST

Results from using their online crest designer are not what I'd call 'professional' but maybe 'passable'. ;)
At least you can get a better idea of the basic elements and various layouts involved in putting a crest together.

    PS: Almost forgot...Welcome to FWT!
EDIT: Have a look at the downloadable files (once registered) here:

I think these are layered psd's. Something to play around with whilst you're learning.

Thanks CP, will try this when I get home tonight. Work has blocked nearly everything....

I am playing around with existing clubs crests in Paint at the moment but as you know, Paint isn't very "advanced" shall we say.

Ohh if only it was as easy as "which button to press". :D
I don't know what does what in Gimp. I'm a Photoshop user.
I've made two 'vector' banners (curved) that you should be able to use in Gimp. One is in .ai, the other .eps. (attached file)
    Below is a preview.

    Thanks very much CP.

I will give it a go and post the result tonight... This may sound a stupid question, how would i make the writing curved to fit as well?

Have to say the help and friendliness of people on here is brilliant...

    Thanks again guys

Well, in photoshop it's under "Create Warped Text" where once selected, you have several available warping options. In your case you would use "ARC."
Or you could draw a curved vector path and have the text follow that path.

Have we any Gimp users out there that could help?

Final option would be to post a zip of your file and ask someone here to add the text for you. :)
