I was trying to figure out how wide (horizontally) to make a heading banner across the top of my web page. I don't want readers to have to scroll across horizontally.

My family and friends have at least one 17" monitor in the household, so my banner will be 870 px wide.

Hope this was helpful and not just taking up space.

P.S. another good article on this. http://www.useit.com/alertbox/screen_resolution.html
