    hi guys,

I've just about finished putting together a site and I was hoping for some feedback. The site can be found here.....

    www.themakeuptimes.com

I started off using the arcitecture template from your site which helped me out massivly......
    https://freewebsitetemplates.com/preview/architecture/

Most of the content is just sample text at the minute.

Go easy on me as this is the first 'proper' site I've built!!!! ;)

I was also hoping for some advice on how to get my site "out there." I've added the sitemap to google so it should get indexed there. Are there any other tips for getting my site noticed??

    Thanks!

For a template, you have 40 validation warnings
You can correct them automatically using HTML Tidy
or use an HTML Editor with HTML Tidy incorporated
or use HTML Tidy online http://infohound.net/tidy/
    just copy and paste.
or you can use firebug with HTML Tidy https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1843
    http://getfirebug.com/
To use firebug First you need firefox
    http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/
    -
As for getting the site noticed
First finish it, then we will help you get noticed
    -
You should at least put your description meta tag in your source code.
Google uses it if it is there and it will help you.
    -
Your tips for make up (cosmetics) should have pictures.
    Look at some other sites
    http://www.ultimate-cosmetics.com/blush-makeup.htm
    - they don't use pictures either
    http://www.beauty-cosmetic-guide.com/
    - they have a few small ones
You could use small ones (click on them to enlarge) called thumbnails (the pictures are called thumbnails if they are small and click to enlarge)
They have free software to do this (in CSS or Javascript or flash)
    -
The rotating pictures on this one is called a picture album and usually is done with flash
    http://www.sachacosmetics.com/
They have free software to build your flash album.
    This one has dropdown menu
    http://www.eyeslipsface.com/
at the top where it says eyes | lips | etc
when you put your mouse pointer on the word, a menu drops down (called a drop down menu (usually done in Javascript) or CSS with Javascript.
They have ready made scripts so all you need to do is put on your site and change the names.
hope this helps and gives you some ideas

Note women like beauty. So you should make your site more beautiful by adding some high-quality pictures. As for me the main picture of a lipstick can also be improved.

So glad you took that pic down of the abstract face. That staring eye really gave me the chills.
As Emily says above, "women like beauty" and I think the site needs a more fuzzy, soft dreamy kind of look to it.

If you're having trouble finding graphics, take a look at these couple of pages of free 'makeup' related pics.

Very good - from 40 validation errors to only 2 - and they are easy to correct.
    -
line 68 column 1 - Warning: <p> anchor "intro" already defined
line 104 column 1 - Warning: <p> anchor "intro" already defined
    ... anchor "..." already defined

    Cause:

An anchor with the same name is already defined. Each anchor should be unique.
    Example:

    <form> anchor "my_form" already defined
    [IMG]<form name="my_form" action="test1.jsp"></form>
    <form name="my_form" action="test2.jsp"></form>
    [IMG]<form name="my_form1" action="test1.jsp"></form>
    <form name="my_form2" action="test2.jsp"></form>
    Solution:

Choose another name for the anchor or modify the previous one.
    References:

That will correct the main or index page for errors listed in HTML Tidy.
    -
Note: You have 10 warnings on the forum page.
sometimes, building and maintaining a web page properly can be such a pain, that is why so many are not very good. Even the professional ones.
You may check out how they look in other browsers and screen resolutions (size) using "browser shots" http://browsershots.org/
use only a few at a time or it will take too long to load.
    hope this helps

thanks for the suggestions. I used the online tidy html you mentioned to get rid of the majority of the errors. I will do what you say to get rid of the remaining few.

Is it normal to have errors on the forum as this is just a forum I downloaded and installed and there isn't really any content in it yet.

I am also changing a few other things, ading meta tags etc. so the site is down at the minute but will hopefully get time to work on it over the weekend.

Will post back once I make the changes.

I really like what you did with that template, I think it looks really nice!
    Really, a good job.

Only a few things I have to say:
    1) Try and make the background image a bit less pixelated.
    2) I noticed that your logo, is a BMP. Which loads really slow because it has almost no compression. (and for some people it won't load at all). So, you should change it to a PNG or JPG, and keep the quality good, but compress the size a bit.

I think thats about all I saw, but other than those two things, really a nice job.
    Good luck with further designs.

Thanks. I ended up changing the template quite a lot. It was extremely helpful in the beginning though because I didn't have a clue and wouldn't have known where to begin. I have managed to figure out quite a bit along the way so maybe next time I could do it from scratch.

I converted the image to a jpg and it's now a lot smaller in size. Like some others here, I'm not so keen on that image so i'm not entirely sure if it will be staying but I haven't found anything I like better to replace it with yet.

I also have quite a few validation errors, most of which are being generated automatically by the content management system. I've got a fix for this which i'm going to apply in the next couple of days.

The plan is for the tips/news/features to be added by visitors to the site. They would do this by using the content management system found here......
    www.themakeuptimes.com/submit.html

Hopefully by doing it this way I will be able to gather a much wider range of information than if I added it all myself. I'm going to continue to add content myself until things get up and running.

I'm pretty happy with the site now so all I need to do is get some traffic as it all seems a bit stagnant at the minute ie. no one on the forums etc.

I have added a sitemap to google so it 's now getting indexed. Are their any other tips for getting the site noticed and generate some traffic??
I don't mind spending a little bit of money but don't want to anything too costly as the site won't be generating any revenue.

    Thanks again everyone!!

    WOW!
You really did a fantastic job!
    I really like it.
And your submit page gives me ideas for what to do with this one project I'm working on!
You really did a great job!

Keep up the good work, and good luck!

BTW, if you need affiliates, let me know. I'd gladly be one.

thanks pezboy. I have really enjoyed the process of putting the site together and in fact I have just signed up for a distance learning Web Development Course at the Open University in the UK. I think this is something I'd really like to make a career out of so we'll see how it goes.

I think for my next step I'll complete the finishing touches to this site and then hand it over to my girlfriend to take care of (she's the makeup artist). Then i'll start putting together another site so I can begin creating a portfolio.

Maybe once I have my own portfolio site we could affiliate those?

You want traffic, submit your site to about 50 search engines and directories.
Do a manual submit and track the SE (search engines) and see when they activate your site. If they isn't active in about 30 to 45 days, resubmit.
    http://www.freewebsubmission.com/
This lists search engines & directories for submission. Do a manual submit and you can be sure who is submitted and track them. It takes time to be activated, so be patient.
    hope this helps
